We sat down with Zak, our Business Developer from Ashfield Digital & Creative, to learn about his journey to Ashfield Healthcare Communications, his passion for BD research and his bucket list goal to go cage diving with sharks!
A bit about Zak
I recently graduated from the University of Sussex studying Business last August and since have completed work experience with Pegasus, an Ashfield agency based in Brighton. I have always been passionate about art and love visiting museums of modern art such as the Tate in London, but my favorite I’ve visited would be The Moma in New York. I love Abstract art in particular and my favorite artist is Joan Mitchell. I love music and I am keen on collecting old house and disco vinyl. I am also a food enthusiast, whatever ingredients I can get my hands on to create new flavor combinations is great, I especially love cooking up a good curry!
How did you get into this role?
As mentioned I had the chance to gain some work experience after university while living in Brighton with Pegasus. I learnt a lot about how agency life works and got business development insights by completing BD related tasks such as creating various competitor analysis’ and updating the CRM. Following this work experience, my manager introduced me to another agency within the Ashfield group, Ashfield Digital & Creative, and I met with the team regarding a job opening for a Business Developer. The role suited me to the core and the agency dynamics emulated my working values – plus I got the opportunity to live and explore up North!
What is a typical day like for you?
I’m responsible for coordinating our business development activities, managing the agency pipeline and working with the rest of the agency to create demand for our services through targeted marketing initiatives.
As I am still new to the role, my day to day at the moment is introductions, training and research around the industry. I am not from a pharma background, therefore I am keen to learn more about the industry. In addition, to help me understand the industries processes I have enrolled on to The Academy’s Healthcare Communications Foundation Course.
What three words would you use to describe the culture at Ashfield?
Supportive, exciting and innovative.
What interests you about business development/marketing?
I like to get involved in all aspects of the business and I feel like this role immerses you in all of the businesses capabilities to allow you to really understand and appreciate how the role can support these areas in tandem.
What are the top three things on your bucket list?
To travel the Eastern world and visit places such as Seoul, Japan and New Zealand.
I would love to further my hobby in DJ’ing and master mixing on vinyl.
To learn a physical hobby such as diving or snorkeling and to cage dive with sharks!
How has Ashfield helped with your career development?
They have been welcoming and have given me the opportunity to develop myself in terms of knowledge with their Academy courses, as well as the flexibility of being exposed to different areas to see where interests spark and go from there.
Where do you see yourself in 5/10 years?
To have a wider understanding of agency life, to develop my research skills and to be able to know the ins and outs of BD. I would also hope to have progressed my understanding of the healthcare communications industry and to be a leader in some form.
