On the morning of Monday 24th October, Physicians World Europe in Mannheim waited for The Great Pumpkin to arrive (you all know your Peanuts Halloween Story don’t you?). Posters all around the office announced “pumpkin-flavoured everything” was on its way and finally, around noon, the buffet was ready. It was not The Great Pumpkin – it was something even better! A fantastic variety of pumpkin food had appeared and was ready to be devoured.

Delicious pumpkin soup (see recipe below), quiche, pumpkin salad that included lots of other healthy ingredients, traditional American pumpkin pie, homemade bread with pumpkin seeds … roasted pumpkin, chutney, jam… it really was “pumpkin-flavoured everything”!

There truly was a myriad of food and everything tasted amazing. Our colleagues had wholeheartedly joined into the spirit of the event and created mouth-watering delicacies. It was a very difficult task to show restraint and leave enough space to taste everything. At the end of the day it was not only the full stomachs that demonstrated how appetising everything was – over 100 € was raised in donations. This is not a small amount for an office of 15 colleagues that day and is a great start to the new financial year.

Our next event is scheduled for December and is a Christmas cookie sale. Yes, we like delicious food over here and we love to share our best recipes …

Pumpkin-Day-Soup

Ingredients

  • 1 kg pumpkin: peeled, deseeded and chopped into chunks
  • 2-3 onion: chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic: chopped
  • 4 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • 100 ml white wine
  • 600 ml chicken stock
  • 200 g cream
  • Salt, pepper, nutmeg
  • 2-3 tablespoon whipped cream
  • 40 g French sour cream
  • Pumpkin seeds

How you do it

  • Heat butter and gently cook onions and garlic until soft but not coloured.
  • Add chopped pumpkin and curry powder.
  • Deglaze with white wine.
  • Add chicken stock and cream and let it simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  • Add salt, pepper and nutmeg and let it simmer for another 10 minutes.
  • Purée everything with a hand blender. For an extra-velvety consistency you can now push the soup through a fine sieve into another pan.
  • Stir in whipped cream and French sour cream.
  • Serve with a few pumpkin seeds on top.
