World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is annually held on 19 August to commemorate aid workers jeopardizing their lives in humanitarian service and to create awareness and gather funds for people affected by disasters worldwide.
The roots of WHD
On 19 August 2003, the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad was hit by a terrorist attack. This horrific attack killed 22 people, among those who lost their lives was Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN’s top representative in Iraq.
Years later, the General Assembly implemented a resolution announcing that 19 August would be World Humanitarian Day. Each year since 2008 the humanitarian community has planned world-wide campaigns to pay tribute on this day, such as promoting the necessity of keeping humanitarian aid workers safe and secure, and protecting the dignity and well-being of innocent civilians affected by catastrophes.
Ashfield’s Humanitarian Culture
Here at Ashfield we respect our staff and carry humanitarian qualities within our culture, therefore celebrating the nature of this day and supporting communities who have been affected by unfair circumstances is something that we have funded and will continue to fund and raise awareness in our communities.
We take the spirit of WHD and would like to reflect on what we have done across the business to help our communities, fund great causes and create humanitarian spirit.
At Ashfield we are supported to carry out charitable works and charitable fund raising for our communities as part of our very own Ashfield Cares initiative. This charitable culture resonates globally across our business.
Some examples of our humanitarian support:
In our Ashby-de-la-Zouch office, our staff took part in collating food for the Impact on Society Week Food Bank drive. All staff got involved and managed to donate 8,973 items to The Trussell Trust that aims to tackle UK poverty. All of this generosity only took our staff at Ashby 5 days, really showcasing the humanitarian spirit.
In Brighton our staff helped a local charity attend Brighton Pride to help raise awareness and fund equality. Pegasus, an Ashfield company, part of UDG Healthcare plc, and helped create a colorful, open-topped bus, so a group of staff and volunteers from Brighton homeless charity, The Clock Tower Sanctuary, could take part in Pride for the very first time.
Meanwhile at Ashfield Healthcare Communications’ Macclesfield Office the staff organized a ‘Summer of Love’ BBQ and raised £400 to East Cheshire Hospice. This was brilliant showcase of community spirit, team work and all for a good cause.
Across to our US colleagues in Pennsylvania who have been sharing the humanitarian spirit while hosting a Town Hall style event for employees to update the company about current events happening at Ashfield. Following this gathering, Ashfield’s Cultural Curation Team partnered with our Senior Leadership Team to host a social for all employees located in our Fort Washington, Pennsylvania office to help kick off the summer. Members of the Senior Leadership team and Cultural Curation team worked together create a happy work environment and even walked around with a cart delivering the sweet summer treats directly to employees at their desks.
Ashfield creates opportunities through the Ashfield Cares initiative for us to lead, work as a team and project manage, it also supports us by recognizing the efforts made by our colleagues within the community.
Our 2017/2018 financial year has seen our colleagues raise over a whopping £28,000 this year and our Ashfield Cares Committee in Macclesfield have raised a further £10,000 through volunteered hours, donated blood, donated goods and general fund raising.
Our Corporate Challenge with Ashfield Healthcare Communications in support of East Cheshire Hospice raised a fabulous £1,200 in May 2018, winning us an award for most innovative ideas. We have managed to support over 13 different charities and 24 colleagues to date. We look forward to the continued support of Ashfield Healthcare Communications for the future of all our endeavors!
