A bit about Jon
Living in the Peak District has been one of my favourite things about relocating for my job. I’m an outdoors person, so the incredible walks and views around the Peaks have been fantastic for me. There’s a great panoramic view of Macclesfield on my commute that I was able to capture! When I’m not wandering around the Peaks, I’m probably playing or watching footie. There’s a 7-a-side setup after work with some of my colleagues from Ashfield, which is a good way to meet different people from across the business.
Discovering the allegro programme
I graduated from the University of Leeds in 2018 with a degree in Medical Sciences BSc. Later that year, I found myself in the allegro training room taking the first steps in my career as a medical writer. Coming from the third intake of allegro writers, I progressed through the programme in its infancy, and it has exceeded my expectations at every turn. Now a fully-fledged medical writer and enjoying each day of my job, I am grateful for the head-start in my professional career that allegro has provided, and I couldn’t be happier to have discovered the ‘med comms’ industry!
My reflections on the allegro programme
Medical writers harmonise science, data and business. allegro never forgets this, with on-the-job learning and tailored support designed to accelerate each aspect of your professional development. What I particularly admire about the programme is the frankly bold yet achievable goal of progressing from an Associate Medical Writer to a Medical Writer in twelve months. Continuous support and feedback is essential for success, and I felt a genuine investment in my development from many people across the business. One thing I didn’t expect from allegro is the strong sense of camaraderie that it fosters. Going through the initial 8-week training period forged a close bond amongst my intake, which has persisted throughout the two agency placements and even after allegro; we regularly get together outside of work and I have made life-long friends!
My favourite highlight from the allegro programme
My favourite highlight from allegro was being able to attend two medical congresses in Barcelona in the same month. Seeing my work come to life and be presented by leading healthcare professionals was truly empowering, and a reminder of the impact that medical writers have on influencing
real-world treatment decisions. The city wasn’t too bad either…
One piece of advice for future intakes
Make sure that you fully harness the unique setup of allegro by asking questions wherever possible. Working alongside people from a variety of backgrounds and tapping in to their wealth of knowledge and experience has been invaluable for my growth; no question is a silly question!
