Last week, a team from FireKite, an agency part of Ashfield Healthcare Communications based in Maidenhead, donated their time to help in a school event at SportsAble, an organisation providing support for disabled people through sports and social activities.

The sport event was intended to give (able-bodied) primary school children an idea of what it is like to live with a disability, particularly of how difficult practicing a sport can be by restricting their vision or use of dominant arms.

The children had a go at archery and boccia as well as taking part in some wheelchair basketball, whilst the team at Firekite provided a bit of coaching (aka retrieved balls and arrows!), cheered for the children, and moved equipment around.

The help was greatly appreciated and the team were invited to return to have a go at the sports, something definitely being considered! All in all a very rewarding experience!

SportsAble was how Maidenhead local Jeanette Chippington became the five-time Paralympic swimmer and now history-making gold medal winning paracanoist at the Rio 2016 games – read more about her story here.
