The Pf Awards are the leading pharmaceutical awards in the UK, and have been recognising talent in the industry for the last 17 years. We are thrilled to announce that we had two winners at the 2017 Pf Awards ceremony – we sat down with Kathy Wadhams to ask her about her experience in the competition.

Kathy, first of all, congratulations on your win! You’re obviously really passionate about what you do so I’d love to know what you enjoy most about your job?

No two days are ever the same – and I love that.

In a nutshell, my role is to train patients and their carers in the use of self-administration devices. As a part of this, we undertake clinical, psychological and quality of life assessments for patients and refer the findings to their GPs.

I’m lucky to work within a great team and I have a fantastic manager that allows me to do my job well.

What was your reaction to being nominated?

To be nominated by my manager was amazing, I really didn’t think that I was a worthy candidate. To then get through the first stage was a real confidence boost for me.

What was your experience at the Pf assessment centre like?

When the assessment day arrived, it was amazing to see so many other nurses – nervous just like me – and even though we had all only met that day, everyone was so friendly and supportive. It was a great atmosphere.

The assessment day consisted of two presentations and an NHS exam. It was rigorous, but very exciting. I was extremely nervous but decided to just be myself. I know that I am passionate about the job that I do and I wanted to ensure that this came across to the assessors.

What are your recollections of the Awards evening in London?

The awards evening was the highlight of my career. It was a fantastic night where I met other candidates from all different companies and roles – everyone was lovely.

When the nominees were announced, I couldn’t believe my name was called, and by the time the winner was announced, I was utterly shocked – I barely remember walking to the stage!

How did you celebrate your well-deserved win?

We celebrated until late with the other nurses and some new friends. After the ceremony, we all congratulated each other on getting this far – it was a real team occasion.

I have had such an amazing amount of support after the event from managers and peers at Ashfield. The amount of emails, text messages and phone calls was unbelievable!

I love what I do, and it’s great to feel so valued and appreciated. I am so proud and incredibly grateful – the award has taken pride of place on my mantelpiece.

What would your advice be to those considering entering next year?

If you are nominated, please go for it! The process is rigorous and hard work, but you get so much out of the experience – it is completely worth it!
