I joined Ashfield Healthcare Communications last July as part of my placement year at university. Initially, I was overwhelmed by the size and scale of the company, however, I quickly realised that they treat everyone as individuals and are keen to invest in everyone’s development to ensure we’re the best we can be. This was demonstrated when I was invited to attend The Academy’s Healthcare Communications Foundation Course earlier this month.
The Academy offers all new and existing employees across the business a chance to attend this highly interactive two-day training course in order to promote our understanding of our clients and Ashfield’s robust strategic approach to communications planning. The course is based around 8 master classes covering how Ashfield Healthcare Communications fits into Ashfield and UDG, why we’re here, drug discovery and development, scientific/educational messaging, publication planning, medical congress and external expert engagement. As one of 42 delegates from across the business, it was both insightful, and at times intense, but I can honestly say we also had a lot of fun with the workshops. One of the highlights for me was creating and delivering a quiz for another team on what we had learnt about publication planning. I also really enjoyed using an interactive voting app to answer live polls during the main sessions and then finding out how we had all voted.
My team were mostly from Macclesfield and Glasgow – so naturally, we named ourselves ‘Scots-field’. We had a dedicated facilitator who stayed with us throughout the 2 days in order to support our personal development and ensure every individual had an equal opportunity to contribute.
In addition to gaining knowledge, the course also created the opportunity to get to know our colleagues. It was invaluable having so many internal experts presenting and supporting us over the course, but perhaps one of the biggest benefits to attending was the networking opportunity. We had lots of time to get to know each other and learn about each other’s roles. As Marketing Assistant, I found it helpful to engage with people from across the business that I may not normally meet. It was also great to put faces to names of people who I will likely be working with in the future! Just learning about where we all fit within the company was great and definitely contextualised what we all do on a day-to-day basis.
At the end of the 2 days I felt motivated to put what I’d learnt into practice. I gained so much from this course in terms of new information, especially since I don’t come from a medical or pharma background. All of the delegates came away with some Academy goodies… which is always a great way to remember the course!
In 2018, The Academy offered 1,522 training places, which represented an investment of over 7,306 training hours. Partnering with the business, The Academy delivers courses that address both the business and individuals’ development needs.
