Whether you’re a graduate looking for your first break or in the industry and eyeing up your next move, Ashfield Commercial and Clinical UK's Recruitment Director, Caroline Wilcher, offers a few tips to help you progress your career.

6 tips to enhance career progression

  1. Stand out from the crowd

We receive more than 400 applications a month from graduates. With such a high volume, we’re really looking for people who stand out.

So, as well as an excellent academic background, we want to see evidence of a strong work ethic and excellent communication skills. That could include volunteering, a challenging hobby, competitive sport or part-time work.

Over the past couple of years, we’ve built relationships with around 20 universities to promote our careers and spot talent earlier. All the graduates that meet our clients’ requirements and pass our initial screening are put through a rigorous assessment process to make sure we’re really getting the cream of the crop.

  1. Hit your targets

6 tips to enhance career progression

It sounds obvious but whatever level you’re at, you have to deliver results. This is a target-driven industry and, ultimately, it comes down to exceeding your key performance indicators. If you’re looking to join the industry, try to build a portfolio of evidence relating to your target-related achievements.

  1. Own your development

Ashfield has a fantastic reputation for training and development and we give our employees the support they need to take their careers in all sorts of exciting directions. There will be many opportunities available to you here, but ultimately it comes down to you. You have to own your development.

Have a plan, find out who can support you and talk to them. Speak to your manager and find out how you can help them – perhaps you can take on extra projects or some of their responsibilities while they’re on holiday.

Make it clear to your manager what your ambitions are and find out what you need to improve to get to that next level. Shadowing is a great way to learn the ropes and identify development opportunities.

  1. Make the most of the role you’re in

6 tips to enhance career progression

We love ambitious people at Ashfield – people who are ambitious for themselves, their team and our clients. But whatever role you’re in, it’s important that you walk before you can run. Have the patience to gain that breadth and depth of experience.

With support from your manager, look at how you can make more of your current role – what can you do to develop it and add value? The people we promote are passionate about what they do and raise their own profile in the job they’re doing.

  1. Think laterally

Sometimes you need to move sideways to move forwards. Moving into a slightly different role at a similar level can broaden your skills and help you in the future.

  1. Look before you leap

6 tips to enhance career progression

You’ve got the skills, experience, attitude and track record – but does your employer match your ambition? It’s tempting to move to a company for a salary increase and a promise of development opportunities, but it’s vital you understand fully how that employer will support your development and progression.

Training and development has been at the heart of our business for over 20 years, but not all organisations have that commitment to their people.

Your research of potential employers should include: Is there a learning and development culture? What is their staff turnover? What is the product pipeline? A little time spent now could prevent you from making a move you regret for many years!
